Chardham Yatra

Best Time to Visit Chardham Yatra

Winter (December to February)

Winter in the Char Dham region is harsh and snowy, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, especially at higher altitudes like Kedarnath and Badrinath. Most of the routes and temples remain closed due to heavy snowfall and landslides, making travel difficult and unsafe. This season is generally unsuitable for pilgrims unless you are an experienced trekker prepared for extreme cold and challenging conditions.

Spring (March to May)

Spring marks the beginning of the pilgrimage season as the snow starts melting and roads gradually reopen. Temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C, making it a pleasant time for travel. The natural beauty of blooming rhododendrons and lush greenery enhances the spiritual experience. This season suits pilgrims who prefer fewer crowds and moderate weather but should still be prepared for occasional chill in higher altitudes.

Summer (June to September)

Summer is the peak season for the Char Dham Yatra, with temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. All routes and temples are fully accessible, and the weather is generally favorable for trekking and sightseeing. However, this period also coincides with the monsoon, bringing heavy rains, slippery trails, and a higher risk of landslides. Pilgrims must exercise caution and check weather updates regularly. Early summer (June) is ideal before the heavy monsoon sets in.

Autumn (October to November)

Autumn is considered the best time to undertake the Char Dham Yatra. The monsoon recedes, leaving behind clear skies, fresh air, and stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas. Temperatures range from 12°C to 25°C, offering comfortable conditions for trekking and temple visits. The trails are less crowded than in peak summer, and the festive atmosphere around the temples adds to the spiritual charm. This season is perfect for all types of pilgrims seeking both safety and serenity.

Best months: Mid-May to June and September to November offer the safest and most rewarding experience for the Char Dham Yatra.
